While the 2032 Brisbane Olympics is still over ten years away, work is already commencing right around South East Queensland, including on the Gold Coast.
When Brisbane was announced as the winning bidder by the International Olympic Committee in July 2021, it was a big deal. Scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 8 in 2032, it will be the third Summer Olympic Games to be hosted by an Australian city, behind the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne and the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.
According to the State Government, the Brisbane bid relied on the premise that over 80% of the venues required to host the international sporting event were already existing infrastructure, which significantly helped in getting “Brisvegas” across the line as the host. However, it’s not just the state’s capital that can expect to take all the glory, with the nearby coastal hub of the Gold Coast set to pl ay a key role in shaping how the 2032 Brisbane Olympics will look like on the world stage.
The Role Of The Gold Coast In The 2032 Olympics
After hosting the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the Gold Coast is already home to many of the sporting and accommodation facilities needed to host Olympic and Paralympic games. With a rich history of producing homegrown heroes like Toby Price and Emma McKeown and attracting long time locals such as Mick Fanning and the late Alex “Chumpy” Pullen, it’s no surprise the Gold Coast is set to reap huge rewards from the upcoming 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
While a 2019 feasibility study suggested that over $900 million dollars would be required from both state and federal funding in order to host the games here in the Sunshine State, there’s no denying that the forecasted $8 billion dollar boost to our local economy could leave lasting impacts that benefit us all. With significant upgrades to facilities and transport in Brisbane already well underway, bolstering the Gold Coast for the influx of domestic and international arrivals will play an important role in the state's long-term tourism and economic recovery in a post-pandemic world.
With pipe dream additions to the city such as a heavy rail connection to Brisbane Airport, further light rail lines, the second M1 and the Coomera bypass all on the cards, it’s no surprise that the local construction industry on the Gold Coast is feeling excited about what the next decade holds. According to Chantelle Lindores, Managing Director of Lindores Mobile Cranes, the golden era for Gold Coast construction is already well underway.
“When the State Government announced Brisbane’s successful bid for the Olympics, they predicted that the event would generate 122,900 jobs in our state’s construction industry. Whether or not that will happen, nobody knows - but I can tell you that for our company alone, we’ve already seen a surge in demand for expansion projects at some of the Gold Coast’s biggest tourism hotspots such as the massive $2 billion dollar redevelopment of the Star Casino.
Projects of this size and calibre have been few and far between for many members of the Queensland construction industry, and we’re proud to be involved with something that will provide ongoing benefits to both visitors and residents of Brisbane and the Gold Coast alike. This part of Queensland has long been a top destination for travellers from right around the world, and the upcoming Olympics will only cement this.”
For the current generation of Queensland school leavers, pursuing a career in construction has never been a more viable option. With job opportunities set to skyrocket and a push towards tertiary education on the cards for all levels of government, it’s also worth noting that the sheer number of tenders alone will spell good news for the many types of sub specialities linked to the state’s construction sector, especially for the those on the Gold Coast.
